In January Governor Schwarzenegger gave a political speech in which he proposed a ten percent budget cut to all California Public Institutions. This ten percent would mean a 4.2 billion dollar cut to California’s Public Schools which would result in an 80 million dollar cut to San Diego Unified School District.
Due to these proposed budget cuts, the San Diego Unified School Board made the controversial decision to layoff 920 teachers. The argument of the school board was that they were trying to maintain a balanced school budget. However, out of the three largest districts in California, San Diego Unified was the only district to make the decision to give teachers layoff notices. A loss of 920 teachers would be detrimental to the city of San Diego.
