San Diego Unified has experienced a drastic cut in teachers which is devastating to everyone. At Jackson Elementary School, 24 out of 26 teachers were issued pink slips in March. This page is devoted to Jackson’s story as an example of the absurdity of this decision for all schools.

UPDATE:

After two months of uncertainty and despair, 20 of the Jackson teachers received letters rescinding their pink slips. Although it is clear that this is a blessing to our students and the Jackson community, we are still working towards saving teachers and education in our school, our city, and throughout the state.

Five years ago, Jackson Elementary School was known as one of the lowest performing in San Diego Unified School District and because of this it was extremely difficult for them to retain their teachers. Jackson hired a brand new staff of teachers who have stuck around for the last five years. In these years, they have raised the API score from a 1 to a 4 and expect this growth to continue. They recently received a Title One Achievement Award as well as The Distinguished School Award. The teachers fell in love with the school and the community and have gone the extra mile to build relationships and to ensure that each of their students will be successful. A loss of 24 of these teachers would be detrimental to the community and the future of the students!
