As I wake up this morning preparing for another weekend of errands, laundry, and even lesson planning, I stopped for a minute to have my breakfast and read the morning paper. As I read on, a particular article caught my eye: GOVERNOR WANTS $7 BILLION BOOST FOR PRISONER CARE Wow, our Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asked the state lawmakers to approve this billions of dollars to build a new medical and mental health facilities to care for these inmates. WHERE ARE YOUR PRIORITIES, GOVERNOR!? Teachers that received these layoff notices have been active and fighting for their students’ education. My first graders are asking, “Why are they taking away teachers?” and “Who’s going to teach us reading?” These questions have been asked by many students and it is so disheartening for us to answer. I understand that many others aside from the education field are being affected by this budget crisis. However, if we look, really look at who will be most affected by these cuts, IT IS THE CHILDREN. There MUST be another way to balance the state budget. The Governor found a way to asked the state lawmakers to approve this $7 billion dollars and $100 billion are to be borrowed from the state’s general fund for the welfare of these inmate prisoners, THEN, how about the welfare of our students?

Education must become a priority in CA! Budget cuts should be made in areas that do not impact students. Teachers touch student lives EVERY day! It makes me very sad to know that our school board has not made cuts in other areas. What is going on in their heads! They are not making decisions in the best interest of our students.

It is sad to see that the prisoner system is a big draw for jobs in California. With kids receiveing less education, less stability in teachers, we will see many of our kids end up in prisons. As a mom who worked very closely with the school while my child was in the K-12 system, I can tell you that familar faces make a difference. Teachers who are there long-term help stabalize a child's life. For many kids teachers are one of the most stable people for them. Don't take away this precious relationship.

The apples at Balboa Park were a huge success. When I talked to my godmother on the phone she was talking about all the news coverage she had seen from the rally yesterday and I asked her if she saw the apples. Of course she said yes and I was so proud to say I was a part of setting it up and getting the message out there about how many people are truly effected by the budget cuts. No one will ever be able to forget the APPLES.
